WHAT IS SPINAL REALIGNMENT?
Spinal realignment, or a chiropractic adjustment, is a procedure in which a chiropractor uses either their hands or a small instrument to apply controlled, sudden force to a spinal joint. The goal of the procedure is to correct structural alignment and improve the body’s physical function.
WHY GET SPINAL REALIGNMENT?
Spinal realignment has been shown to reduce lower back pain, neck pain, headaches, and other joint related ailments.
RECEIVING SPINAL REALIGNMENT
During your first visit, your chiropractor will ask you questions about your health history and perform a physical examination with particular attention to your spine. If your condition seems serious, he or she may recommend an X-ray.
During your realignment, you will be asked to lay down on a chiropractic table in specific positions to treat the affected areas. The most common position will be lying face down on the table as the chiropractor, using their hands, applies controlled, sudden force to your joints, pushing them beyond their usual range of motion. While receiving treatment, you may hear popping or cracking sounds as your chiropractor realigns your joints.
AFTER YOUR ADJUSTMENT
Some people may experience minor side effects for a few days after receiving an alignment. Side effects can include headaches, fatigue, or pain in the treatment area. In most cases, however, patients will feel a general release in tension and pain. Your chiropractor may also recommend additional therapies to help improve your situation, including applying heat or ice packs, massages, stretching, electrical stimulation, or certain exercises.
