What Is Spinal Alignment?

Spinal alignment, or a chiropractic adjustment, is a treatment performed by a certified and trained chiropractor. Using either their hands or a small instrument, they apply controlled, sudden force to the spinal joints to correct the structural alignment of the spine and improve the body’s physical function.

Spinal realignment has been shown to reduce pain in the lower back and neck, relieve headaches, and treat other joint related ailments.

Receiving Spinal Alignment

When you come in for your first spinal alignment session, your chiropractor will ask you questions about your health. After explaining the reason for your visit and describing your symptoms, the chiropractor will perform a brief physical examination. This exam will focus particularly on the spine. If your condition seems serious, he or she may take an X-ray of the area giving you trouble.

When receiving your alignment, the chiropractor will ask you to lay down on the adjustment table in specific positions meant to treat the affected area. The most common position is lying face down on the table. The chiropractor will then use his or her hands to apply controlled, sudden force to your joints. This will push them beyond their usual range of motion which can produce popping or cracking sounds. This is totally normal and is a sign that your joints coming into alignment.

After Spinal Alignment

Some people may experience minor side effects after receiving their treatment. Side effects can include: headaches, fatigue, or soreness in the treatment area. More commonly, patients will feel a general release in tension and pain. Your chiropractor may also recommend additional therapies to help improve your condition, such as heat or ice packs, massages, stretching, electrical stimulation, or certain exercises.
